Free State of Jones

Here is the last movie that I am sitting through for the first half of 2016.  I have the thirst for history, or maybe more for the trivia side, “did you know” side.

To tell you the truth this was one of those movies that I was interested in and I wanted to see if Hollywood would tell the historical, semi-autobiographical story or were they going to tell a story that scooted the edge and just close to a fictionalized story.

Telling the story of the American Civil War seems to be hard today in our PC world.  The language and imagery (flags, floggings, lynchings, slavery) are things that make most people shiver and think to themselves “you can’t say that”, or “you can show that”.  That is the point though of telling the stories from our past through the camera lens or pen-to-paper.  These are things that need to be shown, these are things that need to be said, because if they are not, we are only going to bastardize history and forget what it is we as a country and people went through to get to this point in our lives.

I digress though, maybe I don’t just want the trivial or “did you know” side of history; maybe I want the whole thing.

One last thing, before you decide if this is a movie that you want to get lost in, this movie was produced by a Chinese Production Company.  I’m glad that the movie was made, but a movie about the American Civil War was produced by a Chinese Production Company.  Now you can decide if this is a movie for you to go and get lost in, or not, totally up to you.
